2019 Grand Cru Bonnes Mares, Joseph Drouhin, Chambolle-Musigny

Bonnes-Mares is one of the most notable Grand Cru vineyards in Côte de Nuits in Burgundy. The vineyard lies between Chambolle-Musigny and Morey-Saint-Denis and produces Pinot Noir wines with great structure, depth, and ageing potential.

The vineyard is geographically positioned between the famous Grand Cru terroirs of Chambertin and Musigny. It stretches across two communes, with parcels located in both Chambolle-Musigny and Morey-Saint-Denis. The combination of these terroirs produces wines with both power and elegance.
The name Bonnes-Mares has several possible origins. According to a local legend, a farmer found a statue of three fertility goddesses—called “Bonnes Mères” (the good mothers)—which is believed to have given the vineyard its name. Another explanation is that the word “mares” comes from an old French term for a winegrower’s tool used to dig in the former quarries in the area.
The vineyards lie on a gently sloping soil with calcareous pebbles, which provide good drainage and contribute to the wine’s structure and minerality.
The nose shows classic Pinot Noir aromas of cherry, red berries, and floral nuances, often accompanied by spicy and lightly earthy notes.
The palate is concentrated and well-structured with pure fruit, fresh acidity, and fine tannins, resulting in a wine with depth and length.
