La Tourangelle – Artisan oils with roots in the Loire and visions in California
La Tourangelle is a family-owned producer of culinary oils with deep roots in France’s Loire Valley. The company was founded around 1860 in Saumur by Mr. Morillon and Mr. Bechet and is one of the few remaining oil mills in the area, where small mills along the Loire River have extracted oil from local nuts and seeds for centuries.
In the 1990s, the Kohlmeyer family took over the company and initiated a new phase of growth with an international focus. In 2002, Matthieu Kohlmeyer, the family’s second youngest son, moved to California and built a traditional French oil mill in Woodland – with the same focus on small batches, craftsmanship and quality. The staff were trained in the classical techniques, and La Tourangelle thus became a French-American oil producer with global reach.

From walnut to avocado – oils with character
La Tourangelle started with walnut oil and has today expanded the assortment to a wide range of nut oils and plant oils – including pumpkin seed oil, avocado oil and walnut oil. All products are made with a focus on gentle processing, so the natural nutrients and aromas are preserved. Nuts and seeds are roasted in cast iron, mechanically pressed and lightly filtered, without additives or chemical refining.
The oils are packaged in the characteristic, decorative metal tins – a trademark that both protects the content from light and oxygen while also signaling quality and tradition.
Sustainability and responsibility as a core value
In California, the oil mill is located on a 28-hectare site with 10,000 olive trees and a 350 kW solar farm that powers the production. Through the La Tourangelle Foundation, the company also runs a 1-hectare school garden project and an educational program for the local community.
La Tourangelle is a pioneer in regenerative agriculture and was the first producer in California to achieve Regenerative Organic Certification (ROC) with its sunflower oil.
