ChĂąteau Haut-Brion 2012 – Premier Grand Cru ClassĂ©

ChĂąteau Haut-Brion is one of the four original Premier Grand Cru ClassĂ© estates from Bordeaux’s famous 1855 classification, along with Lafite Rothschild, Margaux and Latour. The chĂąteau is located in Pessac-LĂ©ognan south of the city of Bordeaux and has for centuries been among the world’s most sought-after wines.
The history of Haut-Brion is marked by both grandeur and dramatic events. The vineyards were hit hard by the phylloxera vine louse at the end of the 1800s, and during World War II the chĂąteau was used as a convalescent home for Luftwaffe pilots.
Since 1934, the property has been owned by the Dillon family, who have been crucial to the chñteau’s modern development. A central figure in this story is the winemaker Jean Delmas, who led the estate from 1961 to 2003 and created some of the property’s most iconic wines.
Today, the work is carried on by his son Jean-Philippe Delmas, who since the mid-2000s has continued to develop Haut-Brion’s distinctive style.
Style and character
Haut-Brion has always had a style that sets it apart from the other 1st Growth estates in the Médoc. While Lafite, Latour and Margaux are located in Pauillac and Margaux, Haut-Brion comes from Graves and often shows a distinctive combination of:
  • complexity
  • depth and structure
  • minerality
  • earthy and smoky notes
The wine’s style has evolved over time—from the rich and almost sweet-tasting wines of the 1950s to a slimmer style in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Since the mid-1970s, the style has returned to the more complex and concentrated character that defines the chñteau’s modern wines.
Vintage 2012
Vintage 2012 is a classic Bordeaux vintage with elegance, structure and balance. The wine shows a typical Haut-Brion character with complex aromatics, precision and strong ageing potential.
