FOOD WASTE – Oak Leaves – 8 pcs. – 31-01-2025

In stock

Oak leaves, also known as kashiwa, are leaves from oak trees and are used in cooking in various cultures around the world. In Japanese cuisine, oak leaves have a special significance in connection with a traditional Japanese dessert known as Kashiwamochi.

Kashiwamochi is a Japanese rice cake made from sweet glutinous rice (mochi) filled with sweet adzuki bean paste. What makes Kashiwamochi special is that it is wrapped in a soft oak leaf. This gives the cake a unique flavor and also adds a visual element reminiscent of nature.
The oak leaves for Kashiwamochi are not used as an edible part of the dessert, but they serve as a kind of wrapping that adds a light fragrance and aroma to the cake. The leaves also help keep the cake fresh and protect it from humidity.
Kashiwamochi is traditionally associated with a Japanese holiday called Children’s Day (Kodomo no Hi), which is celebrated on May 5th every year. On this day, Kashiwamochi is served as part of festive meals to honor and bring good luck to the children in the family.
To prepare Kashiwamochi, mochi rice is heated in a steamer and then kneaded into a soft and elastic texture. Then small balls of mochi are formed, and a portion of sweet adzuki bean paste is placed in the center of each ball. Finally, the balls are wrapped in oak leaves and tied with thread or string to ensure they stay together.
Kashiwamochi is an example of how nature and traditions are integrated into Japanese cuisine to create a meaningful and delicious experience.

Soak them in water before use to remove some of the salt.
