Terre Exotique – The story of a French pepper pioneer with roots in Cameroon

Terre Exotique was founded in 1992 by Erwann de Kerros, shortly after he had completed his studies and was originally preparing to enter the military. An injured foot changed his plans, and together with his future wife Marie, he traveled to Penja in northwestern Cameroon to take over the operation of a small plantation of 100 hectares.

A simple life with great learning

Life in Penja was simple – without running water and electricity – but it became the beginning of a deep understanding of pepper cultivation. Erwann learned both from the local population and through his own studies. At that time, pepper production covered approx. 29 hectares, making the Aubriet plantation the largest in Cameroon. The main income came from the sale of bananas and white Penja pepper, which quickly took on a central role in Erwann’s work.

After four years in Cameroon, the couple returned to France. It was here that the idea for Terre Exotique was born.

From exotic fruits to specialty spices

In the beginning, Terre Exotique focused on importing exotic fruits – particularly pineapples from the Aubriet plantation. But with each shipment came a small quantity of Penja pepper, and this became the starting point for something bigger.

Erwann personally visited Michelin restaurants and introduced them to the aromatic pepper, which stood out significantly from commercial alternatives. Together with Florence and Patrick de Font-Réaulx, he developed light- and airtight packaging that preserved the volatile aromas of the pepper – an important factor when focusing on quality and precision.
