Bird’s Eye Chili – the African gem with explosive power

Bird’s Eye Chili, also known as Pili-pili, is one of the world’s most powerful chilies. It measures only 2–3 cm, but its heat reaches the maximum level on the Scoville scale: 10/10. The flavor is intense, fruity, and slightly sweet, making it ideal for elevating both hot and cold dishes with an explosive depth.
Flavor profile and use
  • Fruity, sweet, and powerful chili with pronounced heat
  • Perfect for sauces, rougail, grilled meat, wok dishes, and soups
  • Can be used whole, crushed, or ground – a small amount goes a long way
Botany and cultivation
  • Botanical name: Capsicum frutescens
  • Family: Solanaceae
  • Color: Green during growth, intense red at maturity
  • Growing conditions: Requires warmth, sun, and dry climates
Origin
  • Harvested in South Africa, Uganda, Madagascar, Congo, and Zanzibar
  • The region offers the ideal climate for developing aroma and heat
History
The chili got its name because birds ate the fruits and spread the seeds through their droppings
Introduced to Europe in the 16th century via Spanish and Portuguese trade routes during Columbus’ time
Later adopted in Africa and Asia, where it became a central ingredient in local cuisines – especially in the classic Creole rougail dish
Properties
  • Allergens: None
  • Country of origin: Africa
  • Botanical species: Capsicum frutescens / Capsicum annuum

An iconic chili with intense aroma and historical significance – valued for its pure, fruity heat and used worldwide as a symbol of strength and character.
