1616 / arita japan โ Traditional Japanese porcelain with modern identity
1616 / arita japan is a modern porcelain collection that originates from centuries of Japanese ceramic craftsmanship from the city of Arita โ the birthplace of Japanese porcelain. The name refers to the year 1616, when Korean potters first introduced porcelain craftsmanship to Japan in the city of Arita, located on the island of Kyushu in southern Japan. Here, Aritayaki โ a particular type of Japanese ceramics โ was born, characterized by its extreme thinness, strength, and the use of clay made from crushed stone.

A modern design language from the heart of Arita
Behind 1616 / arita japan is designer and creative director Teruhiro Yanagihara, who in collaboration with the traditional manufacturer Momota Touen has created a porcelain brand that rethinks Japanese ceramics through a modern lens. Momota Touen has deep roots in the regionโs ceramic history and has existed since 1647, when their predecessor operated under the control of the Nabeshima clan.
The production of 1616 / arita japan still takes place in the historic workshops in Arita โ but the expression is renewed. With an uncompromising focus on function, everyday use, and aesthetics, Yanagihara and his team create porcelain that is both refined, robust, and usable.

Design series: TY and Colour Porcelain
The TY series, designed by Yanagihara himself, explores the possibilities of the material in a strict, minimalist language. Here, functionality and everyday use are balanced with visual calm, making the series ideal for both professional kitchens and design-conscious homes.
At the same time, Yanagihara invited the Dutch designers Scholten & Baijings to leave their mark on the collection. The result was the award-winning series Colour Porcelain, where graphic patterns, colour gradations, and European design language create a vivid and artistic dialogue with the Japanese tradition. The two approaches โ TYโs sense of material and Colour Porcelainโs visual rhythm โ cast new light on both Eastern and Western design values.

From Kyushu to the world
Arita is located in Saga Prefecture in northwestern Kyushu and can be reached in one hour by plane from Tokyo. Here โ in the heart of the cradle of ceramic tradition โ Momota Touen continues working with 1616 / arita japan in close contact with local craftsmen and international designers.
Since its launch in 2012 at Milano Salone, the collection has gained great recognition in design circles worldwide and is now sold in more than 20 countries, primarily in Europe and Asia. It is a collection that speaks to food enthusiasts, chefs, and aesthetes who want porcelain that can both be used and admired.
