Champagne Nicolas Maillart – Les Coupés 2019 Brut Nature

Les Coupés 2019 from Nicolas Maillart is one of the rarest and most distinctive cuvées in Champagne. This wine is one of only two Champagnes—together with Bollinger’s famous Vieilles Vignes Françaises—made exclusively from franche de pied vines, i.e., vines planted without the American rootstock that has otherwise been standard since the phylloxera crisis in the early 1900s.
This monoparcellaire and monocépage cuvée of 100% Pinot Noir comes from the Les Coupés parcel in the Premier Cru village of Écueil on the Montagne de Reims. Here, at the bottom of the slope, the vines grow in light soil with low clay content—ideal for highlighting the grape’s finesse and the purity of the terroir.
The 2019 vintage was demanding, but ended up with optimal ripening conditions thanks to cool nights and healthy yields. The result is a Champagne with both freshness and intensity—made without malolactic fermentation and with no dosage at all (Brut Nature), to preserve the grape’s and terroir’s natural expression.
Vinification & style:
The wine is vinified and aged in oak barrels for about 8 months, adding depth and structure. It does not undergo malolactic fermentation, ensuring tension and acidity. Les Coupés is unfiltered and Brut Nature—a truly terroir-driven wine without distracting elements.
Tasting notes:
Appearance: Elegant copper-golden color with fine, persistent bubbles
Nose: Powerful and aromatic with notes of ripe and stewed fruits, milk chocolate, caramel, as well as toasted and smoky wood tones
Taste: Intense and deep with a combination of fruitiness, freshness, and mineral structure. The finish is long, precise, and silky-smooth
Serving & pairing:
Serve at about 10 °C, ideal as an aperitif or with elegant starters, shellfish, or truffle-based dishes. Its structure and complexity also make it well suited to gastronomic pairings.
Limited production:

Fewer than 4,000 bottles of this exceptional cuvée have been produced—a true collector’s wine and a rare chance to experience Champagne made from franche de pied vines.
